ADAMS Susie Doub Adams, 77, February 10, 2009, Deep Creek Friends, North Carolina. Susie was born May 18, 1931, to William Grady and Mattie Wagoner Doub. Susie was a faithful member at Deep Creek Friends Church for over 50 years, where she served on the Hospitality Committee, was president of Circle 1 Missionary Aide and secretary of the Barclay Sunday School class. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Leslie G. Adams. Susie is survived by a daughter, Donna Adams Hutchins; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five brothers, Carlyle, George, Terry, Albert and Shelby (Doris); three sisters, Nannie Lou (Charles) Blankenship, Juanita Henderson and Lorene (Charles) Lashley; nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews. DeWitt Barnett, 91, February 16, 2009, Friendship Friends, North Carolina. DeWitt was born in Shanghai, China, on September 13, 1917, the son of the late Eugene E. Barnett and the late Bertha Smith Barnett. DeWitt was married to Rebecca Magill on September 1, 1945. He was a graduate of the Shanghai American School and the Webb School of California, and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1940. He volunteered for the U.S. Army in 1941 and served with the Signal Intelligence Service in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippine Islands. Honorably discharged in 1945, he served from 1946-65 on staffs of YMCAs. He joined the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in 1955. From 1965-72, he served as Quaker International Affairs Representative in East Asia for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and as director of AFSC’s Japan Unit based in Tokyo, Japan. In retirement, he and his wife lived on Oahu, Hawaii, where he was an active volunteer for the Waianae Community Health Center, the Hawaii AFSC and as a clerk of Honolulu Friends Meeting. He previously had served as clerk for Friends meetings in Montclair, New Jersey, and Hong Kong. In 1994, he and his wife moved from Honolulu to Greensboro where they became residents of Friends Homes West and members of Friendship Friends Meeting. During that time, he served on the AFSC International Division Executive Committee, was a member of the AFSC Corporation, served on the Board of Trustees of New Garden Friends School and as clerk of its Diversity Committee. Surviving are his wife, Rebecca Barnett; daughter, Gail; son, Peter (Barbara); six grandsons; and a sister, Eugenia B. Schultheis. BREEDLOVE Milner Andrew Breedlove, 88, January 14, 2009, Edward Hill Friends, North Carolina. Milner was born May 16, 1920, the daughter of William Worth and Sarah Josie (Willett) Andrew. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernie C. Breedlove; and a daughter, Lynda L. Breedlove. She is survived by one daughter, Jane B. (Clifton) Webster; one granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral was held January 16 at Edward Hill Friends Meeting with the Rev. Randy Hand and Josh Conrad officiating. CARTER Lula “Mae” Atkins Cain Carter, 81, February 12, 2009, Union Cross Friends, North Carolina. Mae was born September 30, 1927, to James Dewey and Lily Vernon Atkins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Fred James Cain, Sr.; and her second husband and best friend for 31 years, William Zeno Carter. Surviving are her children, Peggy (Larry) Hennings, Fred (Sandra) Cain and Shirley (Mike) Williard; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Pearl Matthews; and several nieces and nephews. Her funeral was held February 14 with the Revs. Archie Creed and Reece Wall officiating. CHEADLE Keith Frederick Cheadle, 81, January 13, 2009, Forsyth Friends, North Carolina. Keith was born June 15, 1927. At 18, he joined the Navy to serve in WWII. After his naval service, he attended Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in Rolla, Missouri, and graduated with a degree in electronic engineering. He worked for Western Electric and Bell Labs until his retirement in 1986. All 30 years of service were spent on classified underwater projects for the Navy. Keith was a convinced Friend who enjoyed singing in the choir and the mission trips he was able to go on. Keith was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Ruple and Dona Decker Cheadle; brother, Charles Decker; and twin sister, Suzanne Sauro. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Pat Flippin Cheadle; daughters, Susie Corbett and Eleshia Anne (Paul) Marceau; and four granddaughters. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. COWARD Robert Paidge Coward, 94, January 30, 2009, Liberty Friends, North Carolina. Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Randolph or Liberty Friends Meeting. EDGERTON Alvin Earl Edgerton, 86, January 17, 2009, Goldsboro Friends, North Carolina. Alvin was born in September 27, 1922, to the late David Earl Edgerton and Inez Sutton Edgerton. He retired from Exxon Corporation after 36 years of service. Alvin served his country in the U.S. Army 20th Armored Division during WWII. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Sara Elizabeth Edgerton, Lillian Lewis and Lorena Therkildsen; and his brothers, Herbert, Harold and Ralph. Alvin is survived by his wife, Mildred Fields Edgerton; son, Earl (Beverly); daughters, Wanda Forsythe and Jessica Forsythe; two grandchildren; a sister, Annie Ruth E. EDWARDS Grady Willis Edwards, 98, February 19, 2009, Centre Friends, North Carolina. Grady was born December 7, 1910, to Joshua C. and Cora Osborne Edwards, and was one of 12 children. Following his father’s sudden death, Grady went to work at Mock Judson Voeringer Corporation as a knitter of hosiery. At age 47, he began a new career at Blue Bell Corporation and became supervisor of the Piece Goods Department. Grady attended Centre Friends Meeting and was the oldest member there at the time of his death. He was preceded in death by his parents; seven sisters; three brothers; his wife of 68 years, Vermell Marshall Edwards; his son, Boyd Edwards; and granddaughter, Julie Dillon. He is survived by one sister, Pauline “Mamie” (Frank) Lewis; five children, Colin Edwards, Doris “Dot” Dillon, Grady (Evelyn) Edwards, Sue (Bill) Stafford and Laura (Charlie) Winters; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. GODFREY Arthur “Art” Robert Godfrey, 61, December 6, 2008, Chester Friends, Ohio. Art was born August 18, 1947, son of the late Charles Wesley and Helen Desher Godfrey. He graduated from John Bartram High School in Philadelphia and attended Friends University in Wichita, Kansas. He was a former employee of McKee Addison, Airborne Express, R&L Trucking and Mike Shaw Construction. At Chester Friends Meeting he assisted with numerous activities, including youth camp and the Wilmington Yearly Meeting youth activities. Art is survived by his wife, Rebecca Hackney Godfrey, who he married on June 20, 1973; three children, Lydia (Michael) Donovan, Emma (William) Morris and James David; a brother, Charles; two sisters, Judy Godfrey and Barbara Shipferling; and many dearly loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A celebration of his life through a Meeting for Worship was held at Chester Friends Meeting, with Mike and Nancy McCormick officiating. Memorials may be made to Chester Friends Meeting. GRIFFIN Hilda “Mimi” Workman Griffin, 83, March 6, 2009, Oak Hill Friends, North Carolina. Mimi was born October 29, 1925, to the late Ulysses and Mattie Workman. She worked for Casard Furniture for 25 years, and retired from High Point Furniture in 1987. She is survived by her daughter, Faye (Rick) Brummett; son, Gary (Lisa) Griffin; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held at Oak Hill Friends Meeting with the Rev. Rodney Powell officiating. HACKNEY Mary Eva Bingamon Hackney, 93, November 14, 2008, Chester Friends, Ohio. Mary was born November 1, 1915, daughter of the late Charles and Eva Snyder Coy Bingamon. She graduated in 1933 from Silvercreek Township School and attended Cedarville College. Her first teaching position was at the Old Town Run School in Greene County. She married Robert Bond Hackney on October 7, 1943. After rearing a family, Mary returned to teaching at various schools. In 2006, she was recognized as one of the Outstanding Women of Clinton County because of her volunteer efforts at the Freedom School in Hillsboro. It was there she volunteered one day a week, tutoring children who were withdrawn from school by their parents in protest of segregation. At Chester Friends Meeting, she served as Sunday School teacher and monthly meeting recording clerk. She also served on various committees and boards of the Wilmington Yearly Meeting. She was preceded in death by her husband and four brothers, Chad (Mary) Coy, Ross (Blanches) Coy, Mark (Venda) Bingamon and Donald Bingamon. She is survived by two sons, James (Lois) and David (Pat); a daughter, Rebecca Godfrey; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Bonnie Bingamon. Funeral services were held at the Chester Friends Meeting, with Mike and Nancy McCormick and Jim Ellis officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Chester Friends Meeting or the Jamestown Friends Meeting. HARRIS Paul Harrell Harris, 86, February 24, 2009, South Fork Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Paul was born November 2, 1922. He served his country as a U.S. Marine during WWII. He retired as a long distance truck driver of Associated Transport and Leeway Trucking Companies for over 30 years. Paul is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Chandler Harris; four children, Paulette (Odell) Grumble, Phyllis (Ray) Johnson, Michael (Judi) Harris and Patricia Harris; five grandchildren; and a sister, Pauline (Avery) Duncan. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Wesley Michael Harris. The funeral service was held at South Fork Friends Meeting on February 27 with Ricky Sessoms officiating. Martha was born March 27, 1919, a daughter of Harvey and Nannie (Guthrie) Newlin. Following graduation from Eli Whitney High School in North Carolina, she received a second diploma from the Olney Friends Boarding School, Barnesville, Ohio, and taught in a one-room schoolhouse. She was a birthright member of the North Carolina Yearly Meeting of Friends and a current member of Ohio Yearly Meeting of Friends, Middleton Meeting of Friends and a winter attendee of Pima Friends Meeting, Tucson, Arizona. She is survived by a daughter, D. Pearle (Jerry) Burlingame; four grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Everett Hartley; a son, Harvey; three brothers, Roseland, Burton and Alfred Newlin; and one sister, Mary Bray. A memorial service was held March 14 at Middleton Friends Meeting. Her body was donated to the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Middleton Friends Meeting or a charity of choice. HORNER Gary Edward Horner, 58, August 18, 2008, Jericho Friends, Indiana. Gary was born November 27, 1949, to Lester Horner and Virginia (Fields) Lasley. Gary graduated from Winchester Community High School in 1968. In December of that year, he married his high school sweetheart, Linda Harris. He received his teaching degree from Manchester College and his master’s from Ball State University. His energy and enthusiasm for education and coaching were apparent throughout his 35-year career. He was a member of Jericho Friends Meeting where he served as auditor and trustee for a number of years. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his stepfather, Marvin Lasley. He is survived by his wife, Linda (Harris) Horner; stepmother, Barbara Martin; four children, Katrina (Rea) Riggin, Kristina (Matthew) Halloran, Kurt (Brittany) and Kenneth Horner; three grandchildren; and a half sister, Marsha (Leonard) Willus. JOHNSON The Rev. Wayne Franklin Johnson, 68, January 14, 2009, Deep Creek Friends, North Carolina. Wayne was born February 27, 1940, to the late Roy Melton and Rosa Mae Wright Johnson. He grew up in the White Plains-Red Brush community and attended White Plains School, where he graduated in 1958. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1963 from John Wesley College. Then, he transferred to Guilford College, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1965. He graduated with a Master of Arts degree in 1969, attended the North Carolina Baptist Hospital School of Pastoral Care from 1970-71 and completed his internship in social work classification in mental health. Wayne worked for New River Mental Health in Boone from 1971-84 and Crossroads Mental Health in Yadkinville, Elkin and Mount Airy from 1984-2000. After his tenure with Crossroads, he worked in the evening hours as a private family practitioner from 1986 until his death. In addition to his immense contributions to the mental health field at the local level, Wayne was also called to the ministry at age 18. He was very committed to the cause of Christ and to Quakerism, thus pursued his pastoral duties at Forbush Friends Meeting from 1959-60, Deep Creek and Hunting Creek meetings from 1963-68, Cedar Square Meeting from 1968-71, Pilot Mountain and Westfield meetings from 1971-83, Ararat Meeting from 1983-2000, White Plains Meeting from 2000-08 and then in 2008 he began serving at Deep Creek Friends until his death. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Anne Covington Johnson; a daughter, Kim (John) Williams; a son, Scott (Jennifer) Johnson; three grandchildren; a sister, Casper Jean (Herman) Thomas; and two brothers, Roy (Dot) and Ted (Martha). A funeral service was held January 17 by the Revs. Ben Hurley, Archie Creed and Don Tickle. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care or to the charity of the donor’s choice. MOON Ruth Kimball Moon, 88, February 5, 2009, Cane Creek Friends, North Carolina. Ruth was the daughter of William Lawrence Kimball and Lucy Thompson Kimball, both deceased. She was a retired textile employee; former president of the Missionary Circle of her church; and a hospital auxiliary volunteer for Alamance County Hospital and Alamance Regional Medical Center. Survivors include her daughter, Joyce (Oscar) Bailey; two sons, William (Carol) and Gary; three sisters, Edith Terrell, Sarah Kimball and Rachel Ray; one brother, Kyle (Virginia) Kimball; three sisters-in-law; a brother-inlaw; eight grandchildren; and nine greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Glenn Moon; son, J. Arnold Moon; two brothers; and one sister. The funeral service was held February 8 by Mark Tope and Dale Matthews. MURCHISON Mary Neil Lindley Murchison, 64, February 12, 2009, South Fork Friends, North Carolina. Mary Neil was born May 23, 1944, the daughter of Mark Wilson and Gladys (Pace) Lindley. She was a graduate of Elon University and taught at Jordan Matthews High School for 22 years in the business department. Mary Neil was a member of South Fork Friends Meeting where she played piano, was a choir member and worked as youth director. She is survived by two sons, Chris (Sally) and David (Nikki); one daughter, Jennifer (Brian) Wilson; seven grandchildren; one sister, Becky Andrew; and one brother, Darryle Lindley. POLLOCK Emma Louise Pollock, 91, January 18, 2009, Russiaville Friends, Indiana. Emma was born September 13, 1917, to James Levi and Katie Pearl (Kerby) Conwell. She was married to Ralph Pollock on August 27, 1943, by Ralph’s uncle, Raymond Hart. Emma was a lifelong homemaker and farm wife. She graduated from Clay High School in 1934. Although challenged in her later years by sight problems created by macular degeneration, she remained faithful in her participation at the church, including the Golden Rule Sunday School Class. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Ralph Pollock; their daughter, Patricia (Gary); one granddaughter; three grandsons; three great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister; and three brothers. Funeral services were held January 22, with her pastor, Jamie Lyon, officiating. Memorials may be made to Russiaville Friends Church. PUGH Ronald Dale Pugh, 50, January 9, 2009, Marlboro Friends, North Carolina. Ron was born October 18, 1958. He was a 1977 graduate of Randleman High School and a 1984 graduate of East Carolina University. He was the manager and vice president of Quality Auto Sales in Asheboro and was a member of the Carolinas Independent Automobile Dealers’ Association (CIADA). He is survived by his wife, Diane; one daughter, Tiffany; one son, Tyler; his parents, Sue and Theodore “Bun” Pugh; and one brother, Scott. SATTERTHWAITE Sallie Stone Satterthwaite, 90, February 8, 2009, New Garden Friends, North Carolina. Sallie enjoyed landscaping and working in the garden throughout her life. She was active in the Friends of the Library of Kernersville. She is survived by two daughters, Beth (John) Loflin and Jennifer Satterthwaite; one grandson; one brother, Jerry Stone; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. A memorial service was held February 11 in the living room of Friends Homes Guilford. Memorial contributions may be made to Kernersville-Friends of the Library or Friends Homes Guilford. SHITEMI Ben Makokha Shitemi, 71, October 25, 2008, Malava Yearly Meeting, Kenya. Ben was born in 1937. He was married to Lucy Nekesa Fwamba, and was the father of 15 children. Ben died in a motorcycle accident near Webuye, Kenya. He had retired from his position as general secretary of Malava Yearly Meeting in 2007, and was a very active member of the Friends Church Peace Team. He represented Malava Yearly Meeting at the FWCC Triennial in Ireland in 2007. During his working years, he was a headmaster at several Friends schools and education officer in four different districts in western Kenya. SIMPSON Irene “Rennie” D. Simpson, 77, February 14, 2009, White Plains Friends, North Carolina. Rennie was born June 27, 1931, to the late Oral and Dolly Quesinberry. She was a retired bookkeeper. Surviving are a daughter, Kimberly Simpson; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Lawrence Simpson; and a son, Kenneth Lawrence Simpson. The funeral was held February 17, conducted by the Rev. Kermit L. Gray. SMITH James Edward “Ed” Smith, 85, January 28, 2009, Asheboro Friends, North Carolina. Ed was born February 26, 1923, the son of the late Harry and Fannie Cox Smith. He was retired from Randolph County where he was the first certified animal control officer. He was a member of the Asheboro Civitan Club and the North Carolina Civil Air Patrol Search and Rescue. He enjoyed videotaping weddings and social events for many people and played industrial league and church league softball. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Randol Smith. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Virginia Hancock Smith; son, Rick; sister, Peggy Dean Brewer; brother, Norman Eugene Smith; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to the Randol Smith Van Fund, c/o Asheboro Friends Meeting. TERRY Edith Braxton Terry, 83, January 21, 2009, Plainfield Friends, North Carolina. Edith was born May 5, 1925, the daughter of Robert and Flossie Wright Braxton. She attended Sylvan School and graduated from Eli Whitney High School where she received an academic letter and was awarded the All-Around Female Athlete. She later played for the Liberty All Star basketball team. She attended Burlington Business College and UNC-G and passed the Certified Professional Secretaries exam in 1978. Edith retired as the corporate secretary of Glendale Hosiery after 31 years. She was a member of Plainfield Friends Meeting where she taught Sunday School for 65 years, served as an elder, choir member, Ellen Payne Missionary Society member and treasurer for 35 years. Edith was recognized in 1992 by North Carolina Yearly Meeting as an outstanding Sunday School teacher. She was married for 66 years to Thomas Harold Terry, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Cornelius; and sisters, Hazel and Geneva. She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Stanfield; one son, Tommy (Kim) Terry; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four step-great grandchildren. The funeral was held January 25 at Plainfield Friends Meeting with Ken Spivey and Becky Memmelaar officiating. Memorials may be made to Gideons International or to Plainfield Friends Meeting Building Fund. TUCKER Hilda Burchfield Tucker, 90, February 11, 2009, Archdale Friends, North Carolina. Hilda was born April 14, 1918, a daughter of the late Fred and Maude Dillon Burchfield. She was a lifelong resident of Archdale and graduated from Allen Jay High School and Jones Business College. A birthright Quaker, she had been a member of Archdale Friends Meeting for over 60 years where she served on several committees within the church. She worked for the Randolph County Board of Elections and served as the Archdale Registrar for several years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Tucker; and a daughter, Sylvia Lowder Brown. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Elrod and Becky (Jimmy) Allred; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held February 15, officiated by the Rev. Dave Mercadante. Memorials may be directed to the Archdale Friends Meeting. WHITESELL James H. Whitesell, 85, January 24, 2009, Cedar Square Friends, North Carolina. James was born May 18, 1923, to the late Clayton Harrison and Ella Ingle Whitesell, and was a 1940 graduate of Randleman High School. He spent his career mostly in the textile and furniture industries, and was retired from Jones Frames and the Blacksmith Shop. On November 8, 1941, he married the former Myra Davis Whitesell, who survives. Also surviving are his three children, Jim (Jane), Carol (Darrell) Beane and Phil (Sherri); one sister, Eloise Lawrence; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Playground Fund of Cedar Square Friends Meetinng. WOOTEN Sadie Davis Wooten, 94, March 2, 2009, Forbush Friends, North Carolina. Sadie was born February 16, 1915, to Jess and Wilda Lineberry Davis. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Benbow Wooten; a son, Archie Wooten; one brother, Lewis Davis; and two sisters, Blanche Carter and Pearl Carter. Surviving are her children, Hilda (Mickey) Smitherman, Nellia (Tommy) Hall and Davis (Glenda) Wooten; six sisters, Roxie Hobson, Edith Carter, Faye Brown, Maye Jarvis, Laura Ruth (Page) Wall and Jessie Ray (Jimmie) Smitherman; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Ethel Griffin, Edsel Wooten, Vicy Key, Cora Hutchens, E.V.
