Deaths

BEAVER Thomas T. Beaver, 71, July 15, 2006, Wabash Friends Meeting, Indiana. Thomas was born April 8, 1935 to Paul and Virginia Steerhoof Beaver. He was a member of Wabash Friends Church and worked at Honeywell, Inc. until his retirement. He served eight years in the Indiana National Guard and was a member of Hon Vets. Survivors include numerous cousins.

DAVIS Sybil Smith Davis, 60, Tuesday, June 13, 2006, New Garden Friends Meeting, North Carolina, of breast cancer. Sybil was born on April 3, 1946. As part of her undergraduate education at Kalamazoo College in Michigan, she studied at Fourah Bay College in Sierra Leone. She met and married her husband, Vernie Davis, at Kalamazoo College; after graduation, both taught as Peace Corps Volunteers in Ethiopia for two years. She received her MA from Syracuse University while teaching high school history. She lived in Richmond, IN for seven years, during which time she helped lead a student group to Kenya. For over 20 years, she taught history at Greensboro Day School. Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Vernie Davis; two daughters, Jody (Jeffrey) Green and Jessica (William) Lewis; two granddaughters, Eliza Jane Lewis and Anna Kathryn Lewis; her mother, Evelyn Smith; two sisters, Sue (Sid) Boyd and Kate (Joe) Lawrence; and two brothers, Bob (Diana) Smith and Alex (Kim) Smith.

DRURY Marian Pike Drury, 88, June 18, 2006, Rocky River Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Marian was born on May 20, 1918, and was a lifetime member of Rocky River Friends Meeting. She held life memberships in the Tracy J. Pike Missionary (USFW) Circle and the Garden Club of North Carolina. She was a Charter Member of the Liberty Rose Garden Club. She held many offices in these organizations for well over 50 years. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Tony Avon Johnson, her parents, James G. “Jim” and Myrtle Carter Pike and one brother, J. Earle Pike. Survivors include two nieces Hilda P. (Jim) Gregson; Brenda P. (Wade) Shelton; one nephew, Blake K. (Carol) Pike; three great nieces; one great nephew; one great-great nephew; and four great-great nieces.

FISHER Bernard A. Fisher, 92, June 18, 2006, Winchester Friends Church, Indiana. Bernard was born January 6, 1914 to Russell and Garnet Mendenhall Fisher. He and Jeanne Caron were married November 24, 1936. Bernard’s association with Winchester Friends Church, Winchester, IN dates to the early 1930s when his family became members after returning from California. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge, served as a volunteer firefighter and served as a bingo caller in the Catholic parish for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, one sister and one brother, nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

FULTON Sandra “Sandi” Stanley Fulton, 66, June 20, 2006, High Point Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Sandra was born January 22, 1940, to Robert L. and Jina Bingman Stanley. She was a member of High Point Friends Meeting where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and led many Bible studies over the years. She was recorded as a Minister in the Society of Friends. She had served on the board of Urban Ministry and was serving on the board of Carolina Evangelical Divinity School. She had worked part time on the chaplain’s staff of High Point Regional Hospital. She was the teaching leader in Bible Study Fellowship for 12 years in Greensboro and High Point Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Phillip D. Fulton; two daughters, Amy Ruth and Sally (John) Fulton Fries; two grandsons, Phillip Abram Fries and Isaac Andersen Fries; a twin brother, Randy (Cynthia) Stanley; one younger brother, Steve (Jan) Stanley, one sister, Kathi Johnston; and two brothers-in-law, Groome (Ann) Fulton, Jr. and Craig Fulton.

GRAVES Margaret “Peggy” Graves, 85, January 13, 2006, Plainfield Friends Meeting, Indiana. She was born December 29, 1920 to Virginia and Orville Brunson. In 1943 Peggy married James Rees, Jr. They had four children, Esther Ellis, Dan Rees, Sara Rees and Ginger Brophy, before divorcing in 1986. While living at Friends Apartments, she met Francis Graves and they were married in 1992. They attended West Newton and later Plainfield Friends Meeting. She delivered Meals on Wheels and was a counselor at Quaker Haven Camp. She enjoyed playing the piano and singing in the church choir.

HARGROVE Robert Elwin “Bob” Hargrove, 78, June 27, 2006, Plainfield Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Bob was born February 18, 1928 to Barney and Lillie (Buckner) Hargrove. Along with being a member of Plainfield Friends Meeting, he was a self-employed mechanic. Survivors include his wife, Pearl Maness Hargrove; one son, Lynn (Paula) Hargrove; four sisters, Frances (Rolfe) Philips, Nancy (Billy) Wilkie, Peggy (Bill) Moody and Madge Braxton; and two grandchildren, Morgan Hargrove and Graem Hargrove.

HINSHAW Wanda Marie Whitlow Hinshaw, 78, June 18, 2006, High Point Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Born August 29, 1927, she was the eldest daughter of Webster L. and Nellie Kathleen Hicks Whitlow. She married Darius Marshal Hinshaw, Jr. on June 7, 1946. A graduate of Guilford College, she worked for the District of Columbia Public Schools and the Department of Human Resources— where she was actively involved in women’s rights. Wanda was the Guilford County representative for the North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislature and worked diligently for the rights of seniors. She was also a member of the DAR and Daughters of America. She was preceded in death by her husband, Darius; one son, Marshal L. Hinshaw and two sisters, Doris Reihs and Marylou George. Survivors include her children Jonathan D., Debra (Vincent) Savelli, Janice (Mark) Walker, Pamela M. and Patricia (Jack) Bentley; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grand children and three sisters, Patsy (Jesse) Wilson, Phyllis (James) Cockman and Anita (Gary) Turner.

LAWRENCE Bill J. Lawrence, 77, June 11, 2006, Centre Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Bill was born November 26, 1928, to Jesse and Catherine Sheppard Lawrence. He was engaged in dairying for a number of years and served on the board of directors for Dairymen, Inc. Bill was the owner of Lawrence Sand and Gravel, Inc. Bill was an active member of Centre Friends Meeting where he served on Ministry and Counsel, the Church Building Committee and other ministries He served on the board of directors of Randolph Community College and was a former member of the Centre Community Grange and Level Cross Civitan Club. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Polly Kearns Lawrence; one son, Steven C. (Carol) Lawrence; one daughter, Kathryn L. (Richard) Pedigo; four sisters, Ruth Wiseman, Louie Elks, Mary Craig and Dollis McCreary; two brothers, Wade B. and Woodrow; five grandchildren, Stephanie and Lettie Lawrence, Lawrence (Natalie) Hayes, Will Hayes and Christopher Grove; two step-grandchidren, Brandy and Courtney Pedigo.

MURCHISON James Victor Murchison, 90, July 2, 2006 High Point Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Victor was the third son of William David and Dora Pike Murchison. He graduated from Elon College, with post graduate study at High Point College and Emory University Divinity School. He was recorded a Friends minister by the Western Quarterly Meeting of North Carolina Yearly Meeting in 1938. He began a dual career as teacher at the Providence High School and as pastoral minister at the Science Hill Friends Meeting, Bethel Friends Meeting and Spring Friends Meetings, plus twenty-two years at Winston-Salem Friends Meeting and three years as the Executive Secretary of the North Carolina Yearly Meeting of Friends. He continued his caring pastoral ministry with the Friends Meetings of Woodland, New Hope, Asheboro, Forsyth in Winston-Salem and High Point. His preaching ministry was complemented by his singing ministry and his service through the Quaker Men’s organization. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn and Samuel Murchison. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Marian Kirkman Murchison; one sister, Josephine M. (James) Painter; one sister-in-law, Mary Kirkman (Charles) Routh; and several nieces and nephews.

NELSON Carl Nelson, 87, December 10, 2005, Whittier First Friends, California. Born in Upland, California in 1918, he moved to Whittier in 1940 and became a member of First Friends Church. He was married to Esther Winder Nelson for 65 years. Carl served on or clerked the Outreach Board, Spiritual Life Board and the Public Relations Board. He and Esther were sponsors of both high school groups, Sunday School and Christian Endeavor. He was made a lifetime member of the Women’s Society at First Friends and typeset their yearbooks for many years. Carl had a love of writing and was the original editor of “The Living Light” which he developed with E. Ezra Ellis; he continued as editor until 1976. He created the Friendly Fare column which he wrote until 1981. Carl wrote a history of First Friends, Whittier and during the last 13 years, he taught a class, “Writing your Memoirs,” at the church. Carl’s community roles included president of Toastmasters Club, president of the Writers’ Club of Whittier and president of the Kiwanis club twice. With Esther he published “The Uncommon Cook,” a popular cooking newsletter. He also served on the Interfaith Food Center board for 15 years. During World War II, Carl served on General Eisenhower’s staff in London, England; Normandy & Paris, France; and Frankfurt, Germany. After thirty years in the U.S. Post Office, he retired as Whittier’s assistant postmaster. Survivors include his wife, Esther; two children, Linda (John Brickley) Nelson, and Bruce (Debi) Nelson; two grandchildren, Melissa Nelson Martinez and Mark Brickley; one cousin, Margaret Mercer; and several cousins in Sweden.

SIMPSON Ila Atkins Simpson, 92, June 25, 2006, White Plains Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Ila was born September 29, 1913 to Jesse and Daisy Hardy Atkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.C. Simpson, and son-in-law, Philip Chuy. Survivors include four daughters, Margie (Hobart) Marion, Glenda (J. Glenn) Nichols, Daisy Chuy and June (Jim) Siceloff; seven grandchildren, Douglas Marion, Jerry Nichols, Mitch Nichols, Judy Olechiw, Philip Chuy, Danny Chuy and Brad Chuy; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and three sisters-in-law.

STANDS Ardith Moulder Stands, 93, April 25, 2006, Plainfield Friends Meeting, Indiana. Ardith was born on April 24, 1913 to Daniel and Stella Pugh Moulder. She was married to Blaine Stands on September 3, 1933, both graduates of Friends Bible College, Kansas. Blaine and Ardith pastored many meetings in Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma before coming to Indiana in 1958 where they served at the Westfield, Paoli and New London Meetings. After retiring in 1976, they managed Friends Apartment Homes in Plainfield until 1983. Ardith was a devoted member of the Prayer Chain, USFW, Homebuilders and supported Mission Meals at the Apartment Homes. She greeted everyone at the WYM registration desk even into her 90s and generously shared her talents at the craft booth for Quaker Days. She played piano, taught Sunday School and had served for many years as a counselor and cabin parent at Quaker Haven Camp. She was preceded in death by her husband, Blaine, and one son, Ardin Wayne. Survivors include one son, Don Stands; two daughters, Janette Stands McKee and Rosie Stands Stroud; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren

SUMWALT Margaret Sumwalt, 88, March 27, 2006, Winchester Friends Church, Indiana. She was born July 25, 1917 to Charles and Ruth Medsker. She obtained a nursing degree from Ball Memorial Nurses College and worked as a registered nurse at two hospitals, as well as doing private duty nursing. She married Lavern J. Sumwalt on June 7, 1940. She was an active member of Winchester Friends Church before living in Fort Wayne, IN and Peoria, AZ. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Survivors include two sons, one brother, four grandchildren, and one niece.

WRIGHT Richard Carlton Wright, 80, July 13, 2006, High Point Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Richard was born in 1926. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1949. He served in the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet in World War II. He married his high school sweetheart, Marietta Thompson. He was a member of the Rufus Jones Sunday School class and served as a clerk of High Point Friends Meeting, and on many committees. Richard was in the real estate business for 53 years. For 50 years, he was a member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, including 45 years with the Triad Harmony Express of Winston-Salem. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Marietta; three children, Tom (Sarah) Wright, Carl (Caryn) Wright and Barbara (Frank) Gay; four grandchildren, Nathan, John, Brian and Melanie Wright; and one sister, Marcella Yates.

ZAROU Violet Zarou, 84, July 12, 2006 Ramallah Friends Meeting, Palestine. Violet was born in September 1922 in Ramallah. She was a Friends Girls School graduate and latter graduated from Elon College, North Carolina with a BA in English and School Administration and from the University of South Carolina with a Masters Degree in Education and English. Violet was a devoted Quaker and a hard worker in the field of education. Violet’s teaching career began at Ramallah Friends Girls and Boys Schools. In 1975 she taught English at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) Teacher Training Center in Ramallah and later became the head of the Teacher Training Department until her retirement in 1982. Violet started the Quaker Play School for Palestinian Refugee children at Amari Camp in Ramallah and she retired a second time in 2004 and passed the responsibility to staff she had trained. Many of these children have graduated and are in professions such as medicine and others. Violet came to Amman with her sister Leila who needed medical care and Nadim, their brother wanted them to be in good hands and around the Zaru family. She was preceded in death by her brother, Fuad Saleem Zaru. Survivors include one brother, Nadim (Samia) Zaru; one sister, Leila Zarou; one sister-in-law, Jean Zaru and nieces and nephews, Faris, Omar, Nasir and Maha, and Saleem, Walid and Suha.

HAYNES
Edith Anna Halling Haynes, June 8, 2005, First Friends Church, Whittier, California. Edith was born September 17, 1914 on the family farm near Plainview Nebraska, and was the only one of her siblings to live past the age of two-years-old. She taught Sunday School for 70 years, beginning when she was only 12. Edith went to Nebraska Central College in Central City Nebraska, and held a secretarial job with Nebraska Yearly Meeting. After graduating, she spent a term with the American Friends Service Committee in a settlement house program in Philadelphia. Edith then moved to Alhambra, California and taught for 36 years where she pioneered team teaching and a program for Educationally Handicapped students—she received state, national and international recognition. Edith held leadership roles for Friends Committee on Legislation in California. At First Friends Church she was named Minister of Prison Visiting and also organized a shelter program for the homeless. After her retirement in 1977, she organized Children’s Peace Camps. As a 50-year member of the American Association of University Women, Edith received the Las Distinguidas award for outstanding contribution to the community in 1997. On May 17, 1953 Edith married Gerald Haynes, who she had met as a result of her work with AFSC. Survivors include two sons, Eric (Kim) Haynes and Roscoe (Joanne) Haynes; one daughter, Shamsi; and two grandsons, Brett and Matthew Haynes.
