Deaths ALLMAN Mary Katherine Steele Allman, 81, December 5, 2004, New Hope Friends Meeting, Goldsboro, North Carolina. Mary Katherine was born to Winfield and Helen Steele on January 17, 1923. She attended Cleveland Bible College, William Penn College, Drake University and Ball State University and earned Th.B., B.A. and M.A. She married Wayne C. Allman on July 9, 1946 and served as a minister’s wife in Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Indiana and North Carolina. An English major, she taught English classes at Oskaloosa High, Northeastern High, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Mt. Olive College, Wayne Community College and Saint Leo College. She retired from teaching in May 1993. She enjoyed serving as a youth leader, teaching Sunday School and Bethel Bible classes. Survivors include her husband, Wayne Allman; two daughters, Cheryl Jackson and Marsha Mc- Caulley; and six grandchildren. CARHART Virginia (Ginny) Hoover Carhart, 89, November 2, 2004, Birmingham Friends Meeting, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Virginia was born October 2, 1915, to John and Eleanor Hoover. Virginia taught preschool for ten years. She started becoming blind when she was 40. She married George Carhart in 1956. She was a caregiver to two blind, mentally challenged young women for years, twin blind young men, and her mother. Virginia was concerned with local, national and international politics and a weekly book discussion with Meeting members was held at her home. Since 2000, she had had several debilitating problems, but continued to remain optimistic. She was preceded in death by her husband of eight years, George; one brother, Harold Hoover; and one sister, Portia Akram. Survivors include one brother, David Hoover; one sister, Doris Martin; 12 nieces and nephews; and six great-nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Friends School of Detroit. CAVINESS Edith Cotner Caviness, 96, December 7, 2004, Centre Friends Meeting, Greensboro, North Carolina. Edith was a homemaker and a farmer. She was a former member of Rocky River Friends Meeting and was a member of Centre Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Rezzie Caviness and one daughter, Margaret Caviness Marley. Survivors include one daughter, Maxine C. Larkin; eight grandchildren, Katrine East, Edith Routh, Sharon Marley, James Marley, Debbie Baldwin, Belinda Marley, Timothy Marley and Melody Marley; 12 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. COBLE Hannah Ruth Elizabeth Newlin Coble, 89, December 18, 2004, New Garden Friends Meeting, Greensboro, North Carolina. Hannah was born on June 3, 1915 to Mahlon and Lillian Marlette Newlin. She attended Guilford College and graduated in its centennial class of 1937. Ruth was a birthright Quaker and a member of New Garden Friends Meeting where she was active as long as her health permitted, and she nourished that faith during her lifetime. She was active in North Carolina public schools and served as a member of the board of trustees of Guilford College for a number of years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, William Coble, and one daughter, Janet C. Zink. Survivors include one son, Samuel Newlin Coble; one sister, Helen N. Lineberry; three grandchildren, David B. Nelson, Laura C. Barnes and Dr. Amy Nelson; and several nieces and nephews. COFFIN Gordon Reid Coffin, 94, September 30, 2004, Minneapolis Friends Meeting, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Gordon was born September 2, 1910, the youngest son of Roscoe & Isabella Coffin and a descendant of nine generations of American Quakers. Gordon was enrolled as a member of the Minneapolis Friends Meeting as an infant and remained a member there throughout his life. At the age of 17, Gordon signed the National Peace Pledge. He became a conscientious objector during World War II, and was assigned to forestry work at a Civilian Public Service camp in Coshocton, Ohio. After his discharge he signed up as a truck driver with the European Transport Unit of the American Friends Service Committee and from 1946-1948, he drove his beat-up truck all over Europe, transporting refugees, furniture, chickens, firewood, mattresses, hospital supplies, food, lumber and even cows. When he was sent home with hepatitis in 1948, he brought with him a German accordion, hundreds of photos of the resettlement work and the people he served, and a medal of appreciation from the French government. In 1949, at a square dance, Gordon met Barbara Knight whom he married. Gordon’s reputation for integrity and accuracy brought him great success in his surveying and engineering business. He was an accomplished pianist and for thirty years, he and his accordion led square dancing for the Minneapolis Friends Meeting and for 4-H and other community events. In his 70s, Gordon taught himself to play the flute. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Barbara; and two daughters, Linda and Sandra. DALE Lewis E. Dale, 85, December 29, 2004, Wabash Friends Meeting, Indiana. Lewis was born October 22, 1919, to Lewis A. and Mabel (Early) Dale. He married Leah Stone on July 2, 1948. He was a self-employed farmer and retired from Prabody Seating Company in 1984. He was a birthright member of Wabash Friends Meeting. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of The American Legion and a former member of the Metropolitan School Board. As a young man, he raised Belgian horses and was a member of the American Belgian Draft Horse Corp. Survivors include his wife, Leah Dale; two sons, Philip Dale and Gary Dale; two daughters, Linda Dale and Rita Houlihan; one sister, Deloris Dale; and six grandchildren. GROFF Russell Groff, 26, November 23, 2004, Homewood Friends Meeting, Baltimore, Maryland. Russell was a 2000 graduate of Maryville College where he was an asset to the theatre program. He was an active member of Homewood Friends Meeting and served on various committees in the Religious Society of Friends, both locally and nationally. A writer who aspired to be a playwright, he worked for five years with the box office staff of Center Stage, a Baltimore theater, ultimately becoming Administrative & Group Ticketing Coordinator. He served as dramaturge for the world premiere production of The Spectator for Run of the Mill Theater in Baltimore and Philadelphia. Survivors include his partner of seven years, Kevin-Douglas Olive; his parents, Lowell and Carolyn Groff; one sister, Jane Groff; one brother, Walter Groff; one nephew, Ethan Groff; and the Robert, Sandra, and Jesse Olive family. Memorials may be made to West Knoxville Friends Meeting, 1517 Meetinghouse Lane, Knoxville, TN 37931. LUCKENBAUGH Phyllis H. Luckenbaugh, 54, December 2, 2004, Bethesda Friends Meeting, Maryland. Phyllis was active in her meeting and New Foundation Fellowship. Survivors include her husband, Paul E. Luckenbaugh; two daughters, Lisa J. Luckenbaugh and Pamela E. Luckenbaugh; one brother, L. James Reynolds; one sister, Lois M. Hyson; and six nieces and nephews. Thurber McDonald, 70, January 7, 2005, Bangor-Liberty Friends Church, Iowa. Born April 4, 1934, she was raised on a farm east of Liscomb, Iowa. She married Wayne McDonald and they made their home on a farm outside Clemons, Iowa. After working with her husband Wayne on the farm for over 30 years outside Clemons, Iowa, she began her successful insurance career. Over her 20 years in the insurance business she received numerous awards for sales and quality. She was a board member of the Central Iowa Association of Life Underwriters and received the Agent of the Year Award. Miriam attended the University of Northern Iowa and was a graduate of Life Underwriters Training Council receiving Fellow designation. Miriam served Friends United Meeting as Clerk of the Global Ministries board, Assistant Clerk of Friends United Meeting and on the FUM General Board until she tendered her resignation a week before her death. Her passion was global ministries where she was an advocate of initiatives in Mexico, Ramallah and East Africa. She was active in the support of medical and educational programs in East Africa. She was an advocate of increased recognition of the East African Friends Church and was recognized by East African Friends as the “mother of the Yearly Meetings.” From her early involvement in missions, she was active in Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends Churches establishing new programs in Mexico. She was also active in Bangor-Liberty Friends Church, Bangor United Society of Friends Women, Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends, Marshalltown Soroptimists Club International and the Marshalltown Chamber of Commerce. In her last days, she said death would be her final victory over cancer which had challenged so much of her life. In her final days she guided her family to the passage in II Timothy, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course. I have kept the faith.” Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Wayne; three sons, Douglass, Steve and Scott; one daughter, Sarah Higgins; one sister Doris Hammer; and seven grandchildren, Andrea, Matthew, Timothy, Paul, Madeline and Blake McDonald and Anna Higgins. (Buck) Petty Jr., 79, October 22, 2004, Plainfield Friends Meeting, Siler City, North Carolina. A member of Plainfield Friends Meeting, he was also an Army veteran of WWII and a retired poultry farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda Grey Moon Petty. Survivors include one son, Kerry Petty; three daughters, Kaye P. Hinshaw, Sandra P. Cooper and Joan P. Perry; three sisters, Lib Farrell, Adell Brooks and Pat Andrews; five grandchildren, Tracey Shaw, David Perry, Craig Cooper, Allison Hinshaw and Melanie Pace; and eight great-grandchildren. WARD Howard E. Ward, 87, November 10, 2004, Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting, Sophia, North Carolina. Howard retired from ministry after 40 years of service. He served South Plainfield Friends Meeting, Holly Spring Friends Meeting as well as the United Church of Christ. In addition to his ministry, he also spent many years in the furniture industry. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Cox Ward. Survivors include one son, Howard Ward, Jr.; two daughters, Sandra Cook and Connie Whitaker; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. WEATHERMAN Margaret Ann Myers Weatherman, 72, December 29, 2004, Harmony Grove Friends Meeting, Boonville, North Carolina. Margaret was born October 22, 1932, the daughter of Lester Ray, Sr. and Annie Dixon Myers. She was a graduate of City Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and began her nursing career in Winston-Salem. She also worked as the Yadkin County School nurse until her retirement. She was a member of Harmony Grove Friends Meeting and was actively involved with the North Carolina Yearly Meeting of Friends, where she held several positions. Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Thad Weatherman; one daughter, Julia Weatherman Baity; two grandchildren, Hannah Marie and Caleb John Baity; one brother, Lester Ray Myers, Jr.; and three sisters, Ethel Plyler, Shirley Hutchens and Linda Pegram. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Yadkin County, P.O. Box 1267, Yadkinville, NC 27055. WILLIAMS Hobert Williams, 74, December 4, 2004, Union Cross Friends Meeting, East Bend, North Carolina. Hobert was born November 16, 1930, to Gurney and Rosa Davis Williams. He was a member of Union Cross Friends Meeting and a farmer in his younger days. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and one sister. Survivors include one brother, Clay Williams; two sisters, Cora Hicks and Grace Snow; and several nieces and nephews.
