Deaths
BECK Jerry Duane Beck, 66, January 2, 2003, Portland Friends, Indiana.
Jerry Beck was born July 8, 1936 to Maurice and Esther Davidson Beck.Ê
He served as Elder on Ministry & Oversight, Treasurer, and Clerk of Trustees
at Portland Friends Meeting.Ê He was married to Joyce Resur.Ê Survivors
include his wife, Joyce; two daughters, Sherri McKibben and Sherilyn Garrison;
and four grandchildren
COX Paul Stuart Cox, 88, March 2, 2003, Knightstown Friends Meeting.
Paul Cox was born May 14, 1914, to Emery and Flora (Midkiff) Cox. He married
Anna Lou Chance Cox in 1994. He was a member of the Knightstown Friends
Meeting and his Quaker ancestors originated in England. A member of Knightstown
Kiwanis, he was a past president and Lt. Governor of Kiwanis. He was a
also a member of the Knightstown Chamber of Commerce and had served as
president. He preceded in death by his first wife, Maxine McNew Cox, in
1989. Survivors include his wife, Anna; one son, Richard Cox; one daughter,
Diana Sue Harber; and four grandchildren.
LOGAN Katherine (Kate) Wood Hess Logan 46, March 4, 2003, Community Friends
Meeting, Ohio, from breast cancer. Katherine was born April 25, 1957 in
Ft. Worth, Texas to Horatio and Barbara Wood. A life-long Friend, she
grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she attended Community Friends Meeting.
She graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1979, and worked in the retail
business in Philadelphia and around New York, eventually managing several
Wallachs department stores. In 1984 she married Michael John Logan and
they later divorced. Kate was a gifted linguist who chose to use her language
skills in the retail business, telling her father, "Dad, I love to
shop." When the French Ambassador's wife who spoke no English visited
Wallachs, Kate assisted her. She also used her language skills to help
the storeÕs immigrant tailors to understand what their jobs required.
Kate had genuine concern for people of every walk of life. Survivors include
her parents; two daughters, Olivia Hess Logan and Rachel Downey Logan;
one brother Nicholas Bacon Wood; two nephews, Henry Ragan Wood and Charles
Anderson Wood; and two aunts, Lovell Wood Royston and Ellery Yale Wood.
Memorial donations may be made to the Children's Activity Fund of Ohio
Valley Yearly Meeting.
MILLER Nuran Baydan Miller, 72, January 18, 2003, Patuxent Friends Meeting,
Maryland, of lung cancer. Nuran Miller was born April 5, 1930 in Eskisehir,
Turkey. After spending her childhood in Turkey, she attended college in
the United States, receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Lindenwood
College, St. Charles, Missouri and her Masters degree and Ph.D. in psychology
at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, where she met her husband,
H. Joseph (Joe) Miller. Nuran and Joe were married under the care of Homewood
Meeting, Baltimore, on June 8, 1963. In the late 1960's Nuran and Joe
were faculty members at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey, where
she was instrumental in founding a Masters Degree program in psychology.
After returning to the United States, Nuran taught at Frostburg University
and later at St. Mary's College of Maryland. In 1976 she left teaching
and established her private practice and was the first woman to practice
clinical psychology in Southern Maryland. Nuran and Joe were founding
members of Patuxent Friends Meeting and were active in the life of the
meeting. Nuran felt strongly that Patuxent Friends needed a meetinghouse
to establish the presence of Friends in Southern Maryland and was thrilled
when that dream became a reality in 2001. She was especially excited there
was space for a library, and worked hard on the library committee to organize
books donated to the meeting. Nuran's spirit remained strong after she
became ill with cancer, providing inspiration and strength to others.
Survivors include her husband of 39 years, H. Joseph Miller; one daughter
and son-in-law, Deniz and Mark Carroll; one son and daughter-in-law Erol
Miller and Robyn Shinn-Miller and two grandchildren, Dylan and Ethan Miller;
and one sister, Nigan Atay, of Izmir, Turkey.
SHOEMAKER Albert Corwin Shoemaker, 87, March 15, 2003, Portland Friends,
Indiana. Albert Shoemaker was born September 10, 1915 to Alva and Arlie
Smith Shoemaker.Ê He served in many capacities at White Oak Friends, Portland,
Friends, Van Wert Quarterly Meeting and Indiana Yearly Meeting.Ê He was
married to Ruby E. Ogan.Ê Survivors include three sons, David, Tom and
Doug; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
WHITE Dan-ell D., 77, January 4, 2003, Knightstown Friends Church, Indiana.
He was born May 18, 1925, a son of Paul C. White and Luella Gauker White
and lived most of his lifetime in Henry County. Dan-ell was a 1943 graduate
of Kennard High School. He married Marilyn Stratton on January 1, 1947
in Knightstown. He was affiliated with the Knightstown Friends Church,
a Knightstown school bus driver and a 4-H leader. He was a past member
and president of the Knightstown Lions Club and served as superintendent
of the Henry County 4-H Fair hog show. White was a U.S. Army veteran of
WWII and was a member of the Knightstown American Legion Post 152. Dan-ell
was a farmer and was superintendent of the Indiana State Highway Dept.
at Centerville sub-district for 20 years. He was preceded in death by
his parents and two brothers, Denzil D. and Larry Rex White. Survivors
include his wife of 56 years, Marilyn; one son, Larry S. White; three
daughters, Beverly Dills, Darlene Decker and Karlyn K. White; six grandchildren;
one brother, Bruce E. White; two sisters, Clara Sue Hicks and Myra Lou
Crull; and several nieces and nephews.
WHITE David W. White, 82, December 4, 2002, Knightstown Friends Church.
David White was born April 29, 1920, the son of Wayne W. and Mabel (Nesome)
White. On July 19, 1941, he married Jean OÕNeal. David was a farmer and
businessman. He attended Earlham College and had served as president of
the Willow Branch State Bank and Hancock County Bank. He was past president
of the Soil Service, Morristown Industrial Park, Morristown Lions Club
and Morristown Chamber of Commerce. He had also been involved in the Shelby
County Historical Society, Morristown Farm School, and Knightstown Friends
Church. Survivors include his wife, Jean; one son, Bill White; one daughter,
Emily Anne White-Ellis; three brothers, Joseph N., Wayne E. and Philip
R. White; one sister, Bettie W. Butler; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren;
and two great-great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be sent
to Knightstown Friends Church.
