Deaths:
HAFLICH Gene P. Haflich, 71, Valley Mills Friends, Indiana, August 16,
2002. Gene Haflich married Shirley Flefferjohn, December 27, 1952. He
was an active member of his meeting, serving as Clerk of Ministry and
Counsel and as a financial trustee for Western Yearly Meeting. Gene retired
from the Indiana Petroleum Council as its executive director. Also active
in the community, he served on the environmental committees of the Indiana
Chamber of Commerce and Indiana Manufacturers Association, was secretary
of the board of directors for the Indianapolis Airport Authority and a
member of the Indiana Energy Development Board. Survivors include his
wife, Shirley; one daughter, Karen Hostetter; one son, Robert D.; one
sister, Phyllis Wagoner; two grandchildren.
LINDLEY James Gray Lindley, 89, South Fork Friends, North Carolina August
10, 2002. Mr. Lindley was a native of Chatham County, a retired dairy
farmer and a member of South Fork Friends Church, where he had served
as an elder, trustee and finance committee member. He was preceded in
death by his parents, Albert Newsom, and Annie McPherson Lindley; and
two sisters, Margaret L. Brafford and Eunice L. Beason. Survivors include
his wife, Grace Edwards Lindley; three daughters, Doris L. Cox, Hazel
L. Moon and Betty L. Teague; one son, James Randall Lindley; 10 grandchildren;
23 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Esther L. Wellons and Sarah L.
Stroup. Memorials may be sent to South Fork Friends Church, 359 South
Fork-Bethel Road, Snow Camp, N.C. 27349.
McBANE Anderson Lewis McBane, 69, Spring Friends Meeting, North Carolina,
September 9, 2002. Anderson was a member of Spring Friends Meeting and
an active volunteer with Friends Disaster Service. He was a U.S. Army
veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by
both parents, L. Banks McBane and Esther Braxton McBane. Survivors include
his wife, Betty Byrd McBane; one son, Darrell; one daughter, Susan Tuggle;
one brother, Obert McBane; two sisters, Vernella Gunter and Anna Byrd;
and two grandchildren, Lauren Tuggle and Lewis McBane.
RAUHA Onni Rauha, Turku, Finland, June 12, 2002. Onni Rauha was a science
teacher at Ramallah Friends Boys School from 1951 to 1952. He then moved
to Kenya to become Principal of Kaimosi Friends Secondary School. He and
his wife, Lulu, and daughter Taru returned to Finland in 1956. Beginning
in 1963, he worked for several years in Accra, Ghana, heading the Food
Research Institute under the auspices of the Food and Agriculture Organization
of the United Nations (FAO). From 1981 to 1982 he again worked for FAO
in Thimpu, Bhutan. In retirement, Onni and his wife, Lulu, took care of
Kvakargarden, the Quaker Center in Stockholm, Sweden, from 1982 to 1984.
In the 1990s, Onni was Clerk of the Finnish Yearly Meeting and editor
of Kveekarluutlset (Quaker News). Onni and Lulu were able to enjoy extended
visits with daughter Taru Spiegel, her husband Paul, and granddaughter
Aila in Silver Spring, Maryland. Son Tapani, his wife Maija, and granddaughter
Jasmin live in Turku, Finland.
TUCKER Betty Lou Tucker, 73, New Castle Friends, Indiana, September 7,
2002. Betty Lou was born December 19, 1928, to the late James Lewis and
Florence (Campbell) Whitton.ÊShe retired from Ameriana Bank after 43 years
of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbern Tucker and
both parents.Ê Survivors include one son, Stephen; one sister, Martha;
one brother,ÊRichard; and two grandchildren.
