Deaths:

ALLEN Virgie Brown Allen, 83, Holly Springs Friends, North Carolina, March 3, 2002. Virgie Allen was a native of Randolph County. A member of her meeting for more than fifty years, she taught Sunday School and Bible School and was a member of the U.S.F.W. afternoon missionary circle. She also served as secretary and treasurer of the Holly Spring Memorial Association for 25 years. Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Elmer S. Allen; two sons, Melvin and Wayne T. Allen; one daughter, Nancy Edinger; one brother, W.L. Brown, Jr.; six grandchildren, Michelle Osborne, Gina Bateman, Anthony Wayne Allen, Kelly Renee Beal, Paul Edinger and April Edinger; and eight great-grandchildren.

DeARMOND Mildred J. DeArmond, 88, Wabash Friends, Indiana, February 5, 2002. Mildred DeArmond was born February 21, 1913, to Frank and Mary Hutchens Stouffer. She married Robert D. Smith, who died in 1950. She then married James L. DeArmond on March 29, 1952. She was preceded in death by a sister as well as by both husbands. Survivors include three nieces, Jane Updike, Barbara Wellborn and Bernadine Miller.

FARLOW Stanley Eugene Farlow, 90, Marlboro Friends, North Carolina, February 26, 2002. Stanley Farlow was born August 9, 1911, to Joseph Walter and Edna Farlow. He married Fadine McDowell on January 7, 1933. A resident of Randolph County all his life, Mr. Farlow was a retired dairy farmer. He had formerly been a member of New Market Grange Friends. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Roy and James Farlow; and two sisters, Verda and Clares Farlow. Survivors include his wife, Fadine; one son, Milford C. Farlow; three daughters, Janice Hockett, Shirley Cecil and Wanda Peele; one brother, Joe Farlow; two sisters, Margaret Davis and Martha Hodgin; four grandchildren, Herschel and Keith Hockett, and Sharon and Jeffrey Farlow; and seven great-grandchildren, Phillip, Ella, Anna, Meredith, Benjamin and Andrew Hockett and Ashlie Farlow.

FULK Robia Franklin Fulk, 85, Friends Union Friends, North Carolina, March 16, 2002. Robia Fulk was born December 22, 1916, to Robe Riley and Bessie Elizabeth Spainhour Fulk. He was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara F. Mabe; and three brothers, Vernon, Everette, and George Fulk. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Margaret Jones Fulk; one son, Odell Fulk; one daughter, Betty Jessup; one sister, Ila Hoots; one brother, Clyde Fulk; four grandchildren, Mark Winfrey, Lisa Boles, Lynn Benton, and Sharon Jessup; and seven great-grandchildren.

HOLLOWELL Iris Tumey Hollowell, 101, First Friends, Greensboro, North Carolina, March 15, 2002. Iris Hollowell was born October 17, 1900, to Morton and Nettie Tumey. She spent her childhood and young adulthood in West Lafayette, Indiana. She received her B.S. and M.S. from Purdue University, where she was a member of various honor societies, and she then taught school. She married James Rhoads Hollowell, and they lived in Columbia, South America, before returning to North Carolina and eventually settling in Greensboro. She was very active in her meeting, where she was president of the USFW and taught Sunday School. She was also active in the community, serving as president of Central PTA and a member of the Primrose Garden Club. Survivors include one daughter, Julia H. Reeves; two grandchildren, Charlotte Reeves Walyko and James Hollowell Reeves; and a great-grandson, Michael.

HUTCHENS Reuben Cox Hutchens, 84, Mount Airy Friends, North Carolina, February 6, 2002. Reuben Hutchens was born on October 19, 1917, to Leander Zeno and Leona Davis Hutchens. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was the retired owner and operator of Hutchens Laundry and Dry Cleaners. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Caldwell Hutchens; one son, James Caldwell Hutchens; one sister, Louie Cox Joyner; and one brother, James Cox. Survivors include one son, Joseph Lee Hutchens; one sister, Myrtle Burgess; and one brother, C.C. Cox.

JACKSON Addie Fern Jackson, 81, Carthage Friends, Indiana, February 26, 2002. Fern Jackson was born January 2, 1921, to Dennis and Della Sipes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Jackson. Survivors include two sons, Eldon and Richard; three brothers, Richard, Dale and Edward Sipes; two sisters, Helen Morris and Maude Dilley; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

JAMES Wilma W. Mason James, 88, First Friends, Anderson, Indiana, February 3, 2002. Wilma James was born July 13, 1913, and grew up in West Terre Haute, Indiana. She attended Indiana State Teachers College. She first married Floyd Mason, and after his death she married Earl James. She was an employee of ALAC Garment Cleaners for many years. An active member of her meeting, she represented the meeting as a board member of United Faith Housing. She also volunteered at Marie Thurston Elementary School. She was preceded in death by both husbands. Survivors include two sons, Robert and Richard Mason; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

LOWE Mabel Raiford Lowe, 87, Corinth Friends, Ivor, North Carolina, March 25, 2002. Mabel Lowe was born May 29, 1914, to Fabius and Anise Raiford. She was a retired LPN at Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Edgar Lowe. Survivors include one daughter, Jane D. Smith; one granddaughter, Niki Lee Jernigan; one great-grandson, Bradley Jernigan; and several nieces and nephews.

MENDENHALL Mildred Coffin Mendenhall, 83, Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church, Iowa, March 24, 2002. Mildred Mendenhall was born June 8, 1918, to Everett and Alice (Jones) Coffin. She graduated from Pleasant Plain High School, Iowa, in 1935 and William Penn College in 1940, with a degree in business and education. She married Herschel Lewis Mendenhall on November 27, 1941. In 1957, they adopted a son, Russell, when he was nine years old; he lost his life in an accident as a teenager. Mildred taught school in Promise City and Thornberg, Iowa. While Herschel served in Civilian Public Service, Mildred was a secretary in hospitals located in Williamsburg, Virginia, Concord, New Hampshire, and Independence, Iowa. She then assisted her husband in Iowa pastorates at Richland/Woolson and Middle River Friends Churches, and as Business Managers of William Penn College. They served under the Friends African Mission in Kaimosi, Kenya, as bookkeepers from 1958 to 1961. Later Mildred was the secretary of Pleasant Plain School. The couple farmed near Pleasant Plain until retirement in 1993 when they moved to the Quakerdale campus at New Providence. Mildred was a member of the Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church. She was proceeded in death by her parents; her son, Russell; two brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include her husband, Herschel; one sister, Mabel; one brother, Earl Coffin, and a number of nieces and nephews. Memorials may be sent to Quakerdale Children's Home in New Providence.

NELSON Albert Jones Nelson, 68, Kernersville Friends, North Carolina, February 22, 2002. Albert Nelson was born October 1, 1933, to George and Leanna Manuel Henderson. A U.S. Army veteran, he was a retired member of the Salisbury Veterans Association and a charter member of the Piney Grove Fire Department. Survivors include his wife, Mae Page Nelson; two daughters, Judy Nelson Kiger and Angie Nelson Hoffner; one sister, Sarah Pulliam; four brothers, Roger, Joe, Roscoe and A.G. Nelson; three grandchildren, Michelle Kiger Bates, Jennifer Kiger and Justin Nelson; and one great-granddaughter, Alyssa Bates.

PARKER Martha Lee Parker, 58, Archdale Friends, North Carolina, February 14, 2002. Martha Parker was born July 25, 1943, to Lloyd and Vearl Varner Pearce. A graduate of Guilford College, she married Richard Allen Parker on October 16, 1965. She was the secretary and treasurer of Automotive Refinish Supply, Inc. Survivors include her husband, Richard; two sons, Mark Parker and Todd Parker; one grandson, Steven Zachary Parker; one sister, Sarah Allen; and two nephews, Scott and Greg Allen.

PEACOCK Agnes Elizabeth Virden Peacock, 106, Evanston Friends, Illinois, March 21, 2002. Born in Goshen, Missouri on December 27, 1895, Agnes was a former resident of Park Ridge, Illinois, and active in the meeting there. She was active in the USFW and helped mend many articles of clothing and prepare them for shipping to the AFSC. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Peacock, as well as by two great-grandsons. Survivors include her children, Jackson, Anna Lou Arnett and Robert; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

PHILLIPS Lillian Wooten Phillips, 83, Forbush Friends, East Bend, North Carolina, March 21, 2002. Lillian Phillips was born June 17, 1918, to Edgar and Myrtle Hutchens Wooten. She was an active member of her meeting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Lee Phillips; and one son, Grady Lee Phillips. Survivors include one daughter, Frances Bertotti; one son, George Phillips; four brothers, Benbow, Edsel, Edgar Vernon and Allen Wooten; four sisters, Ethel Griffin, Vicy Key, Cora Hutchens and Barbara Gentry; ten grandchildren, Shannon and Mandy Phillips, Brandy Brandon, Sherri Crutchley, Myra Hicks, Heather Sarin, Candace Bertotti, Charlene Marhenke, Darlene Eads and Robin Campbell; and two great-grandchildren, Brooke Crutchley and Madilyn Brandon.

PUCKETT John Puckett Jr., 70, Forbush Friends, East Bend, North Carolina, February 10, 2002. John Puckett was born on September 13, 1931, to John Thomas and Jessie Pearl Reece Puckett. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was preceded in death by one sister, Eloise Brown, and one brother, Floyd Puckett. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Norma Lee Puckett; one daughter, Shelia Bishop; one son, Ricky Puckett; and four grandchildren, Jennifer, Traci, Jill and Brett.
