Deaths
ADDISON Jesse S. Addison, 82, Carthage Friends, Indiana, October 24,
2001. Jesse Addison was born August 30, 1919, to Don and Marguerite Addison.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dotty; a daughter, Wanda McCleese,
a step-son, and a sister, Lloyd Addison. Survivors include his second
wife, Elizabeth; two daughters, Kay McMahan and Peggy Edwards; two step-sons;
five step-daughters; two brothers, Howard and Lynn Addison; a sister,
Isabell Gardner; nine grandchildren; 22 step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren;
and twelve step-great-grandchildren.
BAKER Alice W. Baker, 84, Winston-Salem Friends, North Carolina, August
22, 2001. Alice Baker was born in Greesnboro, North Carolina, to Charles
S. and Alice L. Walters. She graduated from WomenÕs College in 1938 and
from the North Carolina Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1944. She
married Allen J. Baker in 1948. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Allen; a brother; a half-brother; and two half-sisters. Survivors include
a son, Allen J. Baker, Jr.; two daughters, Susie Rose and Stephanie Mabe;
seven grandchildren, Jeremy and Justin Baker, Eric, Ian and Kyle Rose,
Dawn Potter and Adam Williams; and two great-grandchildren.
BANGLE Nancy A. Bangle, 61, First Friends, Anderson, Indiana, December
4, 2001. Nancy Bangle was born August 13, 1940, to Donald and Helen Cornelius.
She retired from Delco Remy after 21 years and was a member of the Order
of the Eastern Star, Chapter 154 and of the UAW Local 662. She was active
in her meeting, serving on various committees and sponsoring the Ladies'
Lunch Bunch. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Bangle. Survivors
include a daughter, Machelle Birge; her mother, Helen Cornelius; two brothers,
David and Duane Cornelius; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; and
a step-son.
BRADFORD Frances Bradford, 85, Winston-Salem Friends, North Carolina,
September 14, 2001. Frances Bradford was born January 13, 1916 to W.H.
and Mollie Eller McNeill. She graduated from the University of North Carolina
at Greensboro and taught in the public schools of Wilkes and Surry counties
for 30 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Hunter Bradford,
Sr.; two brothers, Frank and Edward; and a son, Bill Bradford. Survivors
include two sons, Fred and John; a daughter, Mary; a sister, Margaret
Blizard; eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
DINKINS Ora Lee Hutchens Dinkins, 89, Pilot View Friends, Yadkinville,
North Carolina, October 17, 2001. Ora Lee Dinkins was born November 18,
1911, to William Franklin Hutchens and Gussie Hennings Hutchens. She was
preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Dinkins; a sister and
a brother. Survivors include two sons, Henry Athalee and Billie Dale;
a daughter, Dorcas Mae Dinkins Cleary; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
HARDING Charles W. Harding, 67, First Friends, Anderson, Indiana, November
5, 2001. Charles Harding was born January 13, 1934, to Edward and Nora
Beinke Harding. He married Genevieve Kinnerey on November 3, 1956. He
was active in Greenfield Friends, Indiana, as well as in First Friends,
Anderson. Survivors include his wife, Genevieve; three daughters, Anna
Marie Rodino, Diane Kelley and Samantha Jo Harding; two sons, Thomas Edward
and Charles Vincent; two brothers, Ervin and Robert Harding; and seven
grandchildren.
HARGROVE Byron Limley Hargrove, 79, Plainfield Friends, Siler City, North
Carolina, August 15, 2001. Byron Hargrove was a native of Chatham County,
the son of Thomas Albert and Lois Jones Hargrove. A lumberman, cattleman
and farmer, he was a charter member and former president of the Silk Hope
Ruritan Club. He was a former member of the Liberty Rotary Club, the North
Carolina Cattlemen's Association, the North Carolina Sheriff's Association
and supported the Snow Camp Historical Drama Association. Survivors include
two daughters, Sandra Johnson and Beverly Scott; a son, Turner Hargrove;
a sister, Doris Perry; three grandsons, Turner Hargrove, Jr., Quinn Hargrove
Johnson, and Cameron Hargrove Scott; and three great-grandchildren.
HEIDEN (Lois) Mildred Heiden, 83, First Friends, Anderson, Indiana, November
22, 2001. Mildred Heiden was born March 22, 1918, to Walter L. and Opal
(Huffman) Caylor. She married Gerald Darwin Heiden, August 3, 1938. She
was active in her meeting, participating in the Friendship Sunday School
Class. Survivors include her husband, Gerald Heiden; a daughter, Vickie
Jo Leibenguth; a son, Gerald Eugene Heiden; a sister, Alberta Baldwin;
six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
KERMAN Ralph Owen Kerman, 78, Stony Run Friends, Baltimore, Maryland,
December 13, 2001. Ralph Kerman grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Evanston,
Illinois. In 1945 he married Cynthia Earl. A Quaker since 1955, he was
a charter member of Kalamazoo Friends Meeting, Michigan, and had also
been a member of Ann Arbor Friends. He helped the AFSC distribute relief
during the war in Lebanon in 1958, while teaching at the American University
of Beirut. He served as Program Secretary of the Michigan Area AFSC from
1962 until 1971, and served as Regional Executive Secretary of the Middle
Atlantic Regional Office in Baltimore. Upon retirement he volunteered
with FCNL as a volunteer from 1988 and 1989 and as a Friend-in-Washington
in 1991 and 1992. He was a lobbyist, testified on renewable energy issues,
and worked on energy policy legislation. Survivors include his wife, Cynthia;
one son, Edwin; and three daughters, Caroline, Jody and Nancy.
MARION Hubert Marion, 94, Old Siloam Friends, North Carolina, October
28, 2001. Hubert Marion was born June 16, 1907, in Surry County to Shane
F. and Lucy Reeves Marion. He was a retired farmer. He was preceded in
death by a son, Hassel; a sister, Ethel Hamlin; and two brothers, Larn
and Earnest. Survivors include his wife, Dotsie Ann Heath Marion; two
daughters, Mary Lou Wilson and Verlie "Sug" Davis; a son, Wayne;
four grandchildren, Tammy Pike, Kathy Marion and Tommy and Timmy Davis;
and eight great-grandchildren.
ODELL Rachel Mabe Odell, 59, Forbush Friends, Greensboro, North Carolina,
August 17. 2001. Rachel Odell was the daughter of Lucian and Kate Mabe
of Lewisville, North Carolina. She received an accounting degree from
Forsyth Technical Community College and worked in various positions as
a legal secretary, medical secretary, executive secretary and a corporate
accountant. A former secretary of the Yadkinville Historical Society,
she was also a member of the Lewisville Historical Society. Survivors
include her husband, W.H. Odell; a son, David; a brother, Wilburn Mabe;
and two stepchildren, James and Beth.
PERRY Hiram C. Perry, 82, Centre Friends, Randleman, North Carolina,
October 22, 2001. Hiram Perry was born on November 21, 1918, to Rosa and
Granville Perry. He retired in 1982 as the owner of Gate City Cleaners,
Greensboro, North Carolina. He was active in his meeting and served as
usher. He was preceded in death by his brother, Everett; and two sisters,
Saran and Lorraine. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; two sons, Bob and
Jack; four stepchildren, Ricky and Roger Hatchel, Virginia Ward and Emma
Jean Wilson; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren
SIMPSON Viola Virginia Wall Simpson, 81, Pine Hill Friends, Ararat,
North Carolina, August 22, 2001. Viola Simpson was born September 8, 1919,
to Willie Green and Maggie Doss Wall of Siloam, North Carolina. She was
a homemaker, merchant and farmer. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Rufus Coleman Simpson; a sister, Mae Slate; and a brother, Howard Wall.
Survivors include a daughter, Polly Simpson Parizek; a son, Bobby Dale
Simpson; a sister, Peggy Wall; and two brothers, Cecil and Roy Wall; four
grandchildren, Todd and Josh Simpson, Sharon Bowman Ford and Janet Bowman
Brooke; nine great-grandchildren.
STOUT Daisy May Stout, 86, Rocky River Friends, Siler City, North Carolina,
October 27, 2001. Daisy May Stout was a native of Guilford County. Survivors
include her husband, Clayton Stout; two daughters, Berniece Stout and
Cleta Coble; a son, Wayne Stout; and three granddaughters.
TAYLOR Mary Edith Taylor, 97, Carthage Friends, Indiana, October 25,
2001. Mary Taylor was born March 19, 1904, to Charles and Rebecca Nigh.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lindley Taylor. Survivors include
a sister, Myrtle Clevenger, and several nieces and nephews.
VESTAL Charlie Monroe Vestal, 78, Forbush Friends, Greensboro, North
Carolina, August 29, 2001. Charlie Vestal was born on January 28, 1923,
to Hampton Monroe and Sarah Carter Vestal. He was preceded in death by
a sister, Stella Spillman, and two brothers, Hillary and Willie Hayes
Vestal. Survivors include his wife, Louise Herring Vestal; a daughter,
Mae Smitherman; a son, Donald; two sisters, Marie Cave and Martha Spillman;
three brothers, Avery, Winford and Junior Vestal; four grandchildren,
Tammy, John, Jason and Jody; and one great-grandson.
WHITE Gertrude Iris White, Chapel Hill Friends, North Carolina, November
7, 2001. Gertrude White was a native of Cologne, Germany. She was a graduate
from the Journalist Academy in Aachen, Germany, and was a news journalist
in Frankfurt. After settling with her family in Winston-Salem, she became
active in the community and was involved in translating the archives used
in restoring Old Salem. She was a member of Piedmont Craftsmen and Carolina
Designer Craftsmen. Survivors include a son, Andrew White; a daughter,
Gabriele Moulfair; and two grandsons.
WOOTON John W. Wooten, 73, Branon Friends, Yadkinville, North Carolina,
August 28, 2001. John Wooton was born June 26, 1928, to the late Carl
W. and Annie S. Wooten. He was retired from the Thomasville Furniture
Company. He was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Swaim, and a brother,
Harrison Wooten. Survivors include his wife, Lillian H. Wooton; a son,
John Thomas Wooten; and a sister, Hazel Peele.
