I'm standing about a block from what was the base of World Trade Center
Tower II.
Firemen hosing smoldering rubble.
Smoke burning my eyes.
Cranes lifting large pieces of debris.
Dump trucks coming and going.
Bits of flying debris on my coat; in my hair.
Unpleasant odor!
What comes to mind is the sign seen yesterday: "The smoke that burns
your throat and the soot on your clothingthat's my son."
The ruin and devastation is indescribable. The challenge is to find God's
healing amid the horror. God was not in the evil that killed people. God
is in our response to such evil. God, take us beyond our comfort zone
to speak Truth in the midst of horror and pain.
As Americans, we are experiencing some of the fears and insecurity people
of Rwanda, Palestine, Afghanistan, and Israel live with daily. September
11 brought the United States of America to our knees. Our love of country
and its founding spiritual principles reminds us that most people of the
world love the land, language and customs of their birth.
Today let's join in a commitment to diligent prayer for security, justice
and peace for all people everywhere. The next step is to become involved
as God leads.
This is an opportunity for Friends. Join me in dialog about what those
opportunities might look like for Friends United Meeting.
