Deaths:

ADAMS Gaston C. "Cotton" Adams, 78, Union Cross Friends, Yadkinville, North Carolina, January 29, 2001. Gaston Adams was born April 5, 1922 to John Wesley and Hattie Bovender Adams. He was an active member of his meeting all his life, and served it in a wide variety of ways. A retired farmer and carpenter, he had been employed by UNIFI, Inc. and was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of the Fall Creek Fire Department for 20 years, also serving on its board of directors. Preceding him in death were his brother, Claude and sister, Opal Williams. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mary Ruth H. Adams; his daughter, Frances Wooten; five sons, Robert, Gaston, Eugene, Jerry, and Jack; ten grandchildren, Paul A. Wooten Jr., Dara W. Davis, Susan A. Fletcher, and Donald, Ronald, Shannon, Heath, Kara, Geoff, and Andrea Adams; four great-grandchildren, Casey Davis, Wes Fletcher, Courtney Wooten and Chelsey Wooten; his sister, Vivian Harrison and three brothers, Jasper, LeeRoy and John.

BEESON Beatrice Hill Beeson, 84, Marlboro Friends, Sophia, North Carolina, January 13, 2001. Beatrice Beeson was born June 15, 1916 to William Alan and Carrie Spencer Hill. She married Howard H. Beeson in 1935, and was a homemaker. An active member of her meeting, she belonged to the Friendly Friends Sunday School class. Preceding her in death was her husband and a daughter, Shirley Beeson Kidd. Survivors include her son, W.S. Beeson; her sister, Ruby Lee Hill Coltrain; two grandchildren, Sidney Beeson and Sharon Beeson Blaylock; and three great-grandchildren.

BLAKLEY Sidney Gray Blakley, 89, East Bend Friends, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, December 19, 2000. Sidney Blakley was born January 23, 1911 to Rurel M. and Mary Elizabeth Wilhelm Blakley. He owned and operated Blakley's Garage, and was an active member of his meeting for many years. Preceding him in death was his wife, Daisy Wall Blakley. Survivors include his son, Melvin; two sisters, Bessie Ruth Kennedy and Etta Mae Bowen; his brother, Clifford; three grandchildren, Lessia Tuttle, Patrick Blakley and Connie Doss; ten great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

CASTOR Mary L. Castor, 78, Winchester Friends, Indiana, January 25, 2001. Mary Castor was born November 15, 1922 to Glenn and Edna Hiatt Mills, and was a retired employee of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. She had also worked at D & J's Restaurant, Winchester. As well as being active in her meeting, she was a member of the Winchester Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Forest D. Castor and her brother, Robert. Survivors include two daughters, M. Lynn Reich and Catherine Ann Castor; two grandsons, one nephew, and five nieces.

DOLL Robert Nevin Doll, 85, Dublin Friends, Indiana, January 26, 2001. Born to Ray Ernest and Mary Fackler Doll, Robert Doll served during World War II as an Army surgical technician. He graduated from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science, and was owner and operator of the Doll Funeral Home in Dublin from 1947 to 1972. He married Shirley England in 1961. He continued to work as a funeral director in both Indiana and Florida until retiring in 1986. Survivors include his wife, Shirley of 39 years; three daughters, Elizabeth Long, Danielle Belden, and Cydney Schockley; his son, Nevin Doll; 16 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

ENGLISH Thomas Roland English, Jr., 63, Archdale Friends, North Carolina, January 7, 2001. Thomas English was born August 8, 1937 to Thomas Roland and Faye Walker English. A Guilford College graduate, he married Kaye Carroll in 1959. He was an active member of his meeting. He had been the owner of a car dealership, English Motors, and had served on the board of trustees of both Guilford College and Perpetual Savings and Loan. He was past president of the High Point Country Club and the Springfield Memorial Association, and a member of the High Point Rotary Club. He also served as the first chairman of planning and zoning for the city of Archdale. Survivors include his wife, Kay; two sons, Thomas Roland III and Charles Carroll; two brothers, Nereus Clark and James Walter; his mother, Faye; and two grandchildren, Landen Charles and Morgen Faith.

FORLAW Henry L. Forlaw, 81, First Friends, Greensboro, North Carolina, January 21, 2001. Henry Forlaw was born September 25, 1919 to Mabel and Lucian Forlaw. He began working for Odell Hardware in a high school vocational program, eventually becoming the company's president. After serving in World War II, he married Marietta McLellan in 1945. He served on the board and later as president for the Wholesale Hardware Group, and was a director of the Wholesale Hardware Association as well as of Carolina Steel. He also served a term as president for the Sentry Hardware Corporation. After retirement his volunteer work with the International Executive Service Corps helped establish hardware and builder's supply stores in various locations throughout the world. Survivors include his wife, Marietta; two daughters, Blair Forlaw and Martha Forrest; five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

KEY Nelson Robie Key, 68, Pine Hill Friends, Ararat, North Carolina, January 10, 2001. Nelson Key was born February 10, 1932 to Robie Fletcher and Connie Bertha Carlyle Key. He was active in his meeting, serving on several committees, and was also active in his community. He was a bus driver for physically challenged students in the Surrey County schools and was a retired custodian for the school system. He was a member of the South Surrey Volunteer Fire Department for many years, serving on its board of directors and also as first responder. Survivors include his wife, Norris Coe Key; his son Wade Nelson; a granddaughter, Emily Denise Key; a sister Decie Dobson; a brother, J.W.; and several nieces and nephews.

LINDLEY C. Devoy Lindley, 68, South Fork Friends, Snow Camp, North Carolina, December 27, 2000. Son of O. Hobart and Mattie (Andrew) Lindley, Devoy Lindley was a native of Chatham County and a farmer. He was active in his meeting and was a member of the Rutian Club. He was preceded in death by his brother Hoyt and his sister Margaret Teague. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Phillips Lindley; two sisters, Faye L. VonCannon and Ruth L. Weston; and several nieces and nephews.

PERISHO Clarence R. Perisho, 83, Mankato Worship Group, Minnesota, and Paullina Monthly Meeting, Iowa, October 15, 2000. Clarence was born April 29, 1917, in Newberg, Oregon to Floyd and Ethel Lowe Perisho. He attended William Penn College, Haverford College, and New York University, receiving a Ph.D. in Education. While teaching at Friendsville Academy, Tennessee, he met Margaret E. White and they were married in 1941. Clarence taught at Nebraska Central in Central City; McCook Jr. College; and Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln. From 1954 until retirement in 1982, he was a professor of chemistry at Mankato State College, Minnesota. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, Minnesota Academy of Science, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In the 1970's, he took up the cause of alternative sources of energy, especially wind-power. Clarence served on the Scattergood School Committee, supported Friends School of Minnesota, Wilmington College and the renovation of Firbank Dormitory at Pendle Hill. He also was involved in FWCC and FUM. He had a lifelong commitment to peace and human justice, international understanding, Quaker education, and socially responsible investing. Clarence's life itself was an example of the testimony of simplicity to an extent few are willing to follow. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; two sons, Robert and William; and his sister, Erma Perisho Wilson. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Ethel and Kazuhiko Kawamura and June and John Schlipf; daughter-in-law Marjorie Nelson; and four grandchildren Christopher Perisho, and Robert, Arthur and Margaret Schlipf.

PROBASCO Teri Lannon Probasco, 47, West Richmond Friends, Indiana, January 26, 2001. Born February 12, 1953 to John and Paula Ellsworth Lannon, she was a 1976 graduate of Northern Arizona University. She taught at the Children's School in Richmond and at the Richmond Alternative School, Ivy Tech College, and in the Centerville schools, as well as serving on the board of the National Trail School. She was also the author of four books. Survivors include her husband, Charlie; three children, Nicole, Jonathan, and Christine; her brother, Steven; her sister, Kathi Taylor; and several nieces and nephews.

ROBBINS Frances Lasley Robbins, 68, Jericho Friends, Winchester, Indiana, January 20, 2001. Frances Robbins was born November 28, 1931 to Rolland I. and Hazel Brown Lasley. Before retirement, she worked for 20 years as an employee of Central Manufacturing, Inc. Preceding her in death were her husband, Kendrick Robbins; three brothers, Marvin, Gerald, and Lloyd; and a sister, Ruby Clapp. Survivors include two sons, Kevin and Doug; a brother, Fay; and five grandchildren.

SIMMONS Daisy Hold Simmons, 95, Kernersville Friends, North Carolina, January 20, 2001. Daisy Simmons was born December 28, 1905 to Edward and Betty Holt. She was active in her meeting and was known especially for her beautiful flowers and the fine quilts she made. Her husband, Samuel Simmons, preceded her in death. Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Norman, Betty Joyce, and Peggy Parrish; eleven grandchildren, Donnie, Jimmy, and Clement Norman, Judy and Kim Whicker, Shannon Cramer, Sue Idol, Pat Tilley, Wendy Jones, Diane Williams, and Debbie Lane; 19 great-grandchildren; a step-great-grandchild; and twelve great-great-grandchildren.

STOUT Daniel Lacy Stout, 89, Plainfield Friends, Siler City, North Carolina, January 28, 2001. Daniel Stout was a retired carpenter who had worked for the Van Thomas Construction Company. He was active in his meeting. Survivors include his wife, Alene Culberson Stout; and two brothers, Edgar and Clayton.

TURNER Paul O. Turner, 91, West Richmond Friends, Indiana, January 20, 2001. Paul Turner was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, January 1, 1910 to Ira Otis and Bertha Marshall Turner. He graduated from DePauw University in 1936 and received his masters from Indiana University in 1940. He taught accounting at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, and was also employed by the Farm Bureau Co-op in Richmond from 1943 to 1954. He was an active member of his meeting and had served on the Associated Committee of Friends on Indian Affairs for the last twenty-five years. He also worked for the American Friends Service Committee in Philadelphia. Together with his wife, he played a large part in Richmond's involvement with the Russia Sister City Program. Survivors include his wife, Marie Elizabeth Thompson Turner; his foster daughter, Mary L. Rispoli; four foster grandchildren; foster great-grandchildren; his brother, Albert; his step-sister, Ruby Ludwick; and several nieces and nephews.

URNER John (Jack) Bailey Urner, 70, Central and Southern Africa Yearly Meeting and Sarasota, Florida Friends Meeting, October 13, 2000, killed instantly in a head on collision in South Africa. Born May 20, 1930 and raised as an atheist, Jack was a member of three other Friends meetings--Florida Avenue, Washington, DC; 57th Street Meeting, Chicago; and Multnomah Meeting, Portland, Oregon. He married his wife Carol Reilley in 1953. Jack earned a Masters in International relations from Johns Hopkins and a Ph.D. in Planning from the University of Chicago. Beginning his work overseas in 1966, he and Carol often found themselves as "isolated Friends" and so helped begin Friends worship groups in all but one place they lived. Jack was active in AFSC peace programs, traveling widely among Friends, and on behalf of Right Sharing. Jack was a Central and Southern Africa representative to the FWCC Triennial in New Hampshire. Survivors include his wife Carol, also critically injured in the same accident but recovering; one daughter, Julie; and one son, Kirby.

WARREN Margaret Draughon Francis Winder Warren, 93, Campus Friends Meeting, Wilmington, Ohio, December 14, 2000. Margaret was born in 1906. A professional social worker, she was an active Friend in Washington, D.C., Ann Arbor, Michigan, and in Cleveland and Wilmington, Ohio. She helped found the WomenÕs International League for Peace and Freedom in Cleveland, and the Peace House in Wilmington. She married Luther Warren when she was 78 and he was 93, and they were active together among Friends for 12 years. Survivors include three daughters.
