Deaths:
ALLEN Alma Allen, 97, December 3, 2000, High Point Friends, North
Carolina. Alma, known to her friends as "Aunt Alma," was born
September 10, 1903 to David Franklin and Martha Ellen Andrew Teague of
Alamance County. She had been a member of her meeting since 1925. She
retired after 45 years at Harris Covington Hosiery, and was then a sitter
at High Point Hospital. She lived in Snow Camp for the past 15 years with
her niece, and made desserts for Ye Old Country Kitchen, and was active
in various senior citizen groups. Her husband, Lewis Allen, preceded her
in death.
BAYLESS Gerald H. Bayless, September 4, 2000, Bloomingdale Friends,
Indiana.
BEST Helen Briggs Best, 89, July 3, 2000, Pima Friends Meeting,
Tucson, Arizona. Helen was a graduate of William Penn College and earned
her Masters in Social Work from the University of Oklahoma. She worked
in various family clinics in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri, and taught
social work at the University of Kansas, where she developed an award-winning
teacherŐs training program. She established a multi-service clinic in
Merriam, Kansas, was long-time president of the Southern Arizona Mental
Health Association, and maintained a private counseling practice until
her death. Helen was a spiritual healer and a member of the Johrei Fellowship.
She and her first husband, Herbert Briggs were founding members of the
Penn Valley Meeting of Kansas City, as well as Oklahoma City Meeting.
Her first husband, Herbert Briggs, preceded her in death. Survivors include
her second husband, Jim Best; one son, David; one grandchild, Cinaman
Azarcon, and three great-grandchildren.
BRICKER Mildred J. Bricker, 86, December 3, 2000, Wabash Friends,
Indiana. Born June 19, 1914 to Daniel and Evaline (Francisco) Jackson,
she married Robert Morris Bricker on February 24, 1935. She was a 1932
graduate of Wabash High School and a lifelong resident of the town. Her
husband Robert preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Ralph
M. and Lee E.; one daughter, Lois Ann Bricker; two grandsons, and two
great-grandsons.
BROWN Grace Brown, 92, November 6, 2000, Bloomingdale Friends,
Indiana. She was a retired school teacher and active in USFW. Survivors
include two daughters, Mary Harvey and Phyllis Warner, four grandchildren
and five great grandchildren.
CHAPMAN Theoren Carter Chapman, 73, March 7, 2000, Bloomingdale
Friends, Indiana. The son of Leland and Achsa Chapman, Theoren was born
and died in the same farmhouse in Penn Township, Parke County, Indiana.
He was a lifetime farmer and member of Bloomingdale Friends. He was preceded
in death by his parents, his first wife, Donna Coffin, a daughter, Catherine
Rubush, and a son Gregory. Survivors include his wife, Marceil; two sisters,
Milley Beckort and Madeline Craycraft; one son, Michael; one daughter,
Brenda Ireland; two stepsons, three stepdaughters, sixteen grandchildren,
and two great-grandchildren.
ELLIS Elizabeth (Betty) Ellis, 87, February 11, 2000, Xenia Friends,
Indiana. Betty was born in Thornville, Ohio, April 7, 1912 to Murray and
Emma Tabler. After high school graduation, she trained as a nurse where
she met and married her husband, Samuel Clark Ellis, in 1934. Samuel served
as an army doctor in South Carolina, New Jersey, and overseas. Upon their
return to Xenia, Elizabeth became active in civic affairs and also was
a supporter of Greene Memorial Hospital. An active member of Xenia Meeting,
Betty taught Sunday School and served on various meeting committees. She
also served on Yearly Meeting committees and was a member of the USFW.
In 1952 she was a delegate to the First Friends World Conference in London.
She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include three sons,
Jon, Thomas, and Donald, and nine grandchildren.
FINAN Suemma Flock Finan, March 20, 2000, Bloomingdale Friends,
Indiana.
FISHER Opal Fisher, 100, October 4, 2000, Lynn Friends, Russiaville,
Indiana. Opal was born March 11, 1900.
FRAZIER Grace VonCannon Frazier, 91, December 4, 2000, High Point
Friends, North Carolina. Grace was born February 10, 1909 to Milton and
Cora King VonCannon. She married Oscar Rudolph Frazier on August 1, 1926.
She was an active member of her meeting for many years. She worked for
the Duke Power Company and was also a homemaker. Her husband Oscar preceded
her in death. Survivors include her daughter, Anna Frazier Draughn; her
son, O. Rudolph; her sister, Ruth VonCannon Smith; four grandchildren
Eric Frazier, Deanna Frazier Kaplan, and Bobby and Michael Draughn, and
11 great-grandchildren.
GERRINGER Hugh Gerringer, 85, December 14, 2000, New Garden Friends,
Greensboro, North Carolina. Born November 8, 1915 to John Calvin and Laura
Thomas Gerringer, Hugh was a native of Guilford County. Hugh was an active
member of the meeting and attended the Brotherhood Class. He served in
the U.S. Air Corps during World War II. He worked for Barnwell Brothers
Truck Lines and Associated Transport, and was a retired employee of the
Vick Chemical Company. He was also a retired member of the Guilford College
Volunteer Fire Department. Preceding him in death were one brother, Vance
Gerringer; and three sisters, Ruth and Wilma Gerringer and Irma Brown.
Survivors include his wife Margaret; a stepson, Granville Robinson; a
brother, J.D.; one nephew, Clarence Brown; three nieces Priscilla Bell,
Diane Bush, and Mary Lou Puckett; three step-grandchildren, Cathy Poe
and Josh and Holly Cooper; and several great nieces and nephews.
HOSKINS Joseph Cook Hoskins, 86, October 24, 2000, College Avenue
Friends, Oskaloosa, Iowa. An active member of the meeting, Joseph taught
Sunday School and was active on several committees. Survivors include
Helen, his wife of 57 years; one daughter, Marilyn; one son, J.C.; five
grandchildren, and two brothers, Moses and Ellis.
JARRELL Herbert Clark Jarrell, 71, November 26, 2000, Trinity
Friends, Lewisville, North Carolina. Herbert was preceded in death by
two brothers, Preston and William Jarrell, and one sister, Kate Burris.
Survivors include Sylvia, his wife of 46 years; four daughters, Gwen Scott,
Wendy Schockley, Cindy Polley and Renee Richard; four granddaughters,
Michelle Sener, Jamie Flaherty, Crystal Scott and Jennie Shockley; a great-grandson,
Alexander Smith; a brother, Graham Jarrell; and a nephew, Squeek Jarrell.
LINSON Lucile Linson, 92, September 3, 2000, Lynn Friends, Russiaville,
Indiana. Lucile was born March 10, 1908. MARIS Robert Warren Maris, Jr.,
July 12, 2000, Bloomingdale Friends, Indiana. He was the son of Robert
(Bob) and Becky Maris and a member of Bloomingdale Friends.
POLLET Dorothy Teague Pollett, 79, December 31, 2000, Cane Creek
Friends, Snow Camp, North Carolina. The daughter of Eugene and Octavia
Hockett Teague, Dorothy married Irving L. Pollett. She attended Guilford
College. A member of the Siler City Presbyterian Church Evening Circle,
the Moor County Daughters of the American Revolution, the Deep River Chapter
of Colonial Dames, the Brush Creek Extension Club and the Chatham Hospital
Auxiliary, she was also past Worthy Matron of the Siler City Order of
the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irving. Survivors
include two sons, Philip Eugene and Douglas Teague; two granddaughters
Hannah and Katelyn; and a grandson, Ethan Allen.
ROBERTSON Daniel Bernard Robertson, 72, December 11, 2000, Kernersville
Friends, North Carolina. Daniel was born October 28, 1928, to Chester
Avery and Irene Angel Robertson of Guilford County. He was an active member
of his meeting, serving on various committees and boards as well as teaching
Sunday School. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was retired from the
McLean Trucking Company. A member of the Stokesdale Masonic Lodge, he
volunteered at the ShepherdŐs Center and for several other volunteer agencies.
Survivors include his mother; his wife of fifty years, Rachel Purdue;
two daughters, Sherri Vincent and Gayle May; two sons, Tim and Dan; two
sisters, Frances Alley and Betty Hundley; and ten grandchildren, Matthew,
Emily, Joshua, and April Robertson, Phillip, Christoper and Rachel May,
Caroline and Ashley Vincent, and Jennifer Belton.
SCOTT James Lowell Scott, 64, September 22, 2000, Anderson First
Friends, Indiana. A member of his meeting since 1940, James worked as
a Central Excavating Specialist from 1960 to 1970. Upon his retirement
after 13 years with Container Corporation, he was a self-employed service
operator, also working as an operator at Meadowbrook Dry Cleaners. He
was also an auto mechanic, and served as a U.S.A.C. officer at Indianapolis
Motor Speedway. He was a member of the Anderson Legion, Post 127. Survivors
include his wife, Ruth Ann; two sons, Jay R. and Elmer Ray; three grandchildren,
Kyle, Alex, and Kelley Nichole; and three brothers, Jay, Gail, and Kenneth.
WHITEHEAD Mildred Lindley Whitehead, 88, December 31, 2000, Rocky
River Friends, Siler City, North Carolina. Mildred was active in her meeting
and a member of the Believers Sunday School class. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Oscar F. Whitehead. Survivors include a niece, Felecia
A. Beavers; and two nephews, Earle Andrew and W.G. Bridges.
